The Jink is the highest-frequency object we make. A sofa is sat on twice a day; a basin is used six times, by everyone in the house, and it is wet each time. That single number drove the entire design, which is a sealed inner shell carrying all the water and a treated denim outer that never carries any.

Fourteen months on beading

Water beads on a treated Jink, which everyone assumes is the finish doing its job. It is, but the beading was never the hard part — repelling water is easy and lasts about eighteen months before the treatment wears at the rim where hands go. Fourteen months went into a rim detail that can be re-treated in place, by the owner, in four minutes, with a bottle we send you annually. The finish is not permanent. We decided the honest response was to make it renewable rather than to overstate it.

Why we ask about your extraction

A Jink in a bathroom with a working extractor fan is a twenty-year object. A Jink in a windowless internal bathroom with no extraction is a maintenance problem within two years, because nothing in that room ever fully dries and treated cotton is not exempt from that. So we ask. It is a question on the order form and it is not rhetorical.

We have declined orders on the answer, which customers find surprising given that we would be the ones taking the money. Our position is that a Jink failing in somebody’s house is worse for us than a Jink we never sold, and the failure would be entirely predictable from a single line on a form we already have in front of us.

Ownership

Care

Re-treat the rim annually with the bottle we send. It takes four minutes.
Wipe the outer faces dry after use if the room is slow to clear.
Never use an abrasive or a bleach cleaner on the outer.
Run the extractor for fifteen minutes after any bath or shower.

Questions we are asked

Before you commit

Does it actually drain properly?

Yes, into a standard 1¼-inch trap, at the same rate as any ceramic vessel basin. The inner shell is sealed and seamless; the denim is entirely outboard of the water path.

Will it grow mildew?

Not if it dries. A Jink in a ventilated bathroom is fine indefinitely. A Jink in a windowless room with no extraction is a problem in about two years, which is why we ask about your ventilation before accepting the order and occasionally decline it.

Why is there no overflow?

An overflow requires a hole through the shell and a channel behind it, and that channel is exactly the sort of place water sits and never dries. We specify a slotted waste instead and accept the trade.

How long does the treatment last?

About eighteen months at the rim, longer elsewhere. We post you a re-treatment bottle every year for a decade. We would rather tell you the finish is renewable than imply it is permanent.

Does it look wet?

For a few minutes after use, yes, and darker where the water sat. It returns to its dry colour within about ten minutes. Photographs of the Jink almost always show it wet, because that is when it is at its most striking and we are not above that.
